I ride this road at least once a month on a FJR.
It is one of the best rides around the area.

This section of US-501 can be a very enjoyable ride.
It is scenic with just enough twists and turns to keep things from being boring.
I live in Lynchburg and make the run to Buena Vista or Natural Bridge often just for fun.
HOWEVER, you have to keep in mind that this road is heavily traveled by logging and pulp wood trucks.
Chances are about 50/50 that you will encounter one along your journey.
There are precious few (legal) passing opportunities in the most enjoyable section.
If that happens, just turn around and ride it again.

My wife and I rode this route last week.
We connected to the Blue Ridge Parkway outside of Lynchburg to bring us back into Roanoke.

I live on this road and drive it every day, often on my '03 SV650S or '92 built Stang.
A BLAST and many twisties, but during the summer traffic gets a little heavy.
Try waiting at the bottom for a gap in traffic.
I HIGHLY recommend connecting on the parkway back to Buena Vista or to Buchanon, or continue on VA 130 at 501 split to 635 (Buffalo Spring Tnpk) and then RT.60 west back to Buena Vista.
BEST ride Iíve ever been on, and I can do it EVERY DAY!

I live next to this road and ride it at least a couple times a mouth.
It is a great road.
It is a must ride.

I drove my 18 wheeler on this road, never again, but ready for a trip on my bike.
Very steep, sharp turns, blind too.
