As noted by previous posters, this road is seriously technical on the Virginia side.
Well worth it, because once you reach the top, you've found Breaks Interstate Park, the 'Grand Canyon of the South' overlooking the Big Sandy River as it cuts through the middle Appalachians.
The park includes a lodge and restaurant if you're looking for an overnight stay.
Once you cross into Kentucky, the road shifts to river sweepers as you follow the Big Sandy to Elkhorn City, which has full services available.
Definitely off the beaten path - a hidden gem.

The section of Route 80 in Russell County going across Hayters Gap has some very difficult curves--not for beginners.
Narrow road, decreasing radius turns, and no guard rails.
Will have gravel across the road after hard rains.
If experienced, this is a great road.
