I just rode this 10/24/10 and it is a great route to take across VA.
I went from the top of the mountain in the west to 522 in the east.
In the west when you come off the mountain it is hard to believe how tight the road is and it goes right around a few houses.
Do not push it in this section.
There are a few tight sections after that but mostly tree covered road with small towns and great countryside.

I have taken this road too.
It's a great cruise with long sweeping curves, with a few up and down rolling hills here and there.
An added stretch (to make a big loop) is to take Route 29 south from Woods Mill down to Lovingston and pick up Route 56 down to Buckingham and Route 60, then follow 60 east to Powhatan and then take Route 522 north, back to Goochland.
- Rider from Richmond, VA (3/30/08)
Two lane road, mostly 55 mph, over rolling hills.
You'll travel through several small towns. Little traffic.
