I rode this route on 9/2/11.
417 east of Wellsville is by far the better section, Olean to Wellsville is slow with lights and more local traffic.
But you will be rewarded with lots of elevation changes and nice curves.

I rode this route last week (8/20/08) and absolutely loved it.
I rode beyond the recommended length, from Corning/Addison to Salamanca where NY 417 terminates.
The recommended section though is by far the most fun to ride.
It isn't too hard to pass slower traffic despite the almost continuous curves.
The real joy of the road though is finding the preferred line through the corners.
You begin to feel connected with the road and can really get into a good rhythm.
It's a feeling I haven't experienced on any other road.
It runs through forests and mountains but sightless through corners really aren't that bad considering the terrain.
The pavement is in generally good condition to very good condition.

I rode Route 417 last Friday (04/11/08) and have to say it is a beautiful ride.
I went from Corning to Wellsville, so I can't vouch for the road further west.
The surface is in pretty good shape, the traffic was light and there are lots of passing zones.
