Enhance this ride significantly by taking the Shelter Island Ferry in Greenport over to Shelter Island.
Breathtaking bay views at restaurants.
Continue across Shelter Island and take opposite Ferry to Sag Harbor, East Hampton and Montauk if you like.
You can then return across Shelter Island and return west on Sound Ave or stay on the south fork of Long Island and head west on Sunrise highway.

This is our Sunday afternoon ride road.
We start on Sound Avenue in Riverhead, then it's east at least to Greenport.
Be aware of your surroundings, because of deer, day and night.
We stop in Greenport for a ride on the carousel, or for a few dances on the dock at Claudios to live music, then it's back on Sound Avenue to pick a place for dinner.
Usually, Greek food at Helenic's or a Famous steak at Elbow Room East.
A great mini vacation that takes only a few hours.

You can't see the ocean from Route 25 anywhere!.
Most of this route (Hicksville to Riverhead) is full of stop lights and traffic.
All shopping centers and strip malls.
Maybe at 2am you might be able to ride, but most other times you will be walking your bike.
The only decent ride out here on Long Island is Sound Avenue from Wading River east.

Amazing. I have done this route during a sunny day, in which case its nice and you get to a wonderful point when you come out of a small town and hit a two lane road where all you see is ocean all around.
I have also done the road at 2AM and it is exhilarting and scary.
That same road, you cannot see anything past your headlight, but you can hear the ocean...eerie!
Highly recommended for night riding.
