Rode NC-49 from Roxboro to Burlington on 5/19/12 and it's good to see the resurfacing that was underway the last time I rode it is complete.
It's a sweet ride from Roxboro to Pleasant Grove.
On a sad note, south of Burlington near Beale Road we had a rider lose their life on the same day when, according to reports, she ran off the road on a nasty curve I believe is marked with a 35 mph recommended speed.

But Wait - There's More!', as they would say on TV.
NC 49 continues all the way down into Charlotte; in particular, the stretch from Asheboro to Charlotte, through the Uhwarrie National Forest, is very popular with local riders.
Combine it with US-64, and you can get back and forth from Charlotte to the Triangle without going anywhere near an Interstate.
Perfect for an all-day cruise.

The current map on the site stops on the southern end in Burlington, but the jewel of this road is the stretch between Burlington and Liberty.
Quite a few nice turns - a variety of wide-open sweepers & tighter twisties.
It's not the mountains, but it is nice.

Nice backroad to a scenic destination.
In VA, take a right onto US-58 E/49 N and a left onto US-58 BR E and that will lead you into historic, downtown Clarksville, VA (less than 5 miles off of SR-49).
Be sure to cross the bridge for a great view of the water.

A nice country road with little traffic.
Some sweeping turns and lots of good scenery.
